The starch in popcorn isn’t good for the Guinea Pig’s digestive system and can lead to diarrhea and vomiting. If they eat too much, the starch converts to sugar, affecting blood sugar levels which can result in your Guinea Pig putting on weight.
What Happens if the Popcorn Isn’t Plain?
Most human food isn’t plain, and we like to add salt and butter to our popcorn. So, what should you do if your Guinea Pig eats popcorn with added flavors? Your first step is to call your veterinarian and tell them which seasonings on the popcorn they consumed. They will let you know what to look out for, if you need to bring your pet in for a check-up, and which worrying signs to be aware of. With small pets, there is less room for error than there would be for a larger animal; a spilled piece of popcorn is much more dangerous to a Guinea Pig than it would be for a dog.
Common signs that your Guinea Pig has eaten something they shouldn’t include:
Ataxia
Change in activity or lethargy
Depression
Diarrhea
Drooling
Muscle tremors
Reduced appetite
Seizures
Vomiting
Weakness
However, don’t wait for worrying signs to appear. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect your Guinea Pig has consumed flavored popcorn or anything else concerning.
