Owning a dog unfortunately means dealing with fleas. Flea treatments come in different shapes and forms. Many Australians also have to take tick control into account with the deadly paralysis tick on the east coast and E. canis being spread by brown dog ticks elsewhere. This list will help you determine which treatments are best for your circumstances. With these reviews, we're going to cover a range of treatments available now in Australia to help you get an understanding of how they work and other common dog pest issues that they may help eradicate.

  • The 9 Best Flea Treatments for Dogs in Australia

    1. Simparica — Best Overall

    Simparica

Simparica has been given the best overall because of its value for money. It is the cheapest option on this list to cover fleas and ticks for 6 months for a 20kg dog. The active ingredient is Sarolaner. Simparica is a monthly tablet that covers fleas and ticks. The tablets are chewable and most dogs will eat them willingly. Simparica TRIO is also available which covers intestinal worms and heartworm in addition to fleas and ticks. It’s definitely the best option if your dog weighs less than 2kg.

    Pros

    • Kills 100% of fleas in 8 hours
    • Only requires monthly treatment
    • Easy to administer
    • Safe for dogs as small as 1.25kg

    Cons

    • No-go for puppies under 8 weeks
    • Not safe for pregnant & nursing dogs

    2. Frontline Plus — Best Value

    Frontline Plus

Frontline Plus is a monthly spot-on treatment. It gets rid of fleas in every stage of their life including flea larvae, eggs, and adults. Frontline Plus kills fleas on contact. You can buy it online or at your nearest pet shop. The active ingredients include S-Methoprene and fipronil. If used monthly it is the best priced option on this list for a 20kg dog receiving 6 months of treatment. However, if applying every 2 weeks for paralysis tick coverage it will be one of the more expensive options on the list.

    Pros

    • Kills fleas on contact
    • Kills eggs in the environment

    Cons

    • Not for puppies less than 8 weeks of age
    • Need to apply every 2 weeks for paralysis tick coverage

    3. Bravecto Spot-On — Very Convenient

    Bravecto Spot-On

Bravecto Spot-on is a Fluralaner based product and actually delivers the same dose of Fluralaner that the Bravecto chewable tablet does. Because of the way it is then absorbed this formulation actually gives 6 months of flea and tick prevention. It also kills mites such as ear mites and demodex.

    Pros

    • Easy to apply
    • Longest acting flea/tick control
    • Kills fleas within 8 hours
    • Safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs

    Cons

    • Not for pups less than 8 weeks
    • Not for dogs weighing less than 2kg
    • Young growing dogs, especially large breeds, may outgrow their dose
    • No washing or swimming 3 days after treatment

    4. Frontline Spray — Best for Puppies

    Frontline Spray

Frontline spray is applied as a spray on treatment from a pump bottle. The active ingredient is Fipronil. When applying, the whole animal must be covered which is challenging in larger dogs and very wriggly dogs. It is safe in young puppies from 2 days old and in adult dogs lasts for a long time. It does protect against ticks if applied every 3 weeks. There is a dosing chart with the bottle and the number of sprays a dog gets is related to their weight.

    Pros

    • Protects adult dogs against fleas for 12 weeks
    • Safe to use on puppies from 2 days old
    • Protects against paralysis ticks
    • Cost effective

    Cons

    • Needs to be sprayed over the entire body
    • Apply every 3 weeks for paralysis ticks

    5. Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs — To Repel Ticks

Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs

If you prefer an old-fashioned dog collar, Seresto's collars are probably the best you can get. The collar uses sustained-release technology to provide continuous protection for fleas, ticks and lice. It is very cost effective for larger dogs but if it repeatedly gets wet this will reduce its effectiveness. The collar is odorless, non-greasy, adjustable, and lightweight. The active ingredients in this collar are flumethrin and imidacloprid, which are released in a low concentration all in oils over the dog's coat and skin, killing ticks and fleas on contact.

    Pros

    • Cost effective
    • 8 months of protection against fleas
    • Repels ticks, including the paralysis tick, for 4 months
    • Helps protect against tick-borne disease such as E. canis.
    • Easy to apply
    • Odorless, adjustable, and lightweight

    Cons

    • No-go for puppies under 7 weeks
    • Slower kill time for existing infestations- 24 hours for fleas, 48 hours for ticks
    • Shampooing or frequent exposure to water can reduce the efficacy

    6. Bravecto Chew

    Bravecto Chew

The Bravecto chewable tablet will give 3 months of flea and paralysis tick prevention. The active ingredient is Fluralaner. Like the Bravecto spot-on, it kills mites.

    Pros

    • Safe for breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs
    • Longest acting chewable tablet

    Cons

    • Not for dogs under 8 weeks of age
    • Not for dogs weighing less than 2kg

    7. Nexgard

    Nexgard

Nexgard is a monthly chewable tablet that protects against fleas and ticks for the full month. It is also available as Nexgard Spectra which prevents heartworm and kills intestinal worms. The active ingredient is Afoxolaner.

    Pros

    • Approved for breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs.
    • Kills fleas in 8 hours.
    • Full month protection against paralysis tick

    Cons

    • Not for dogs under 8 weeks of age
    • Not for dogs less than 2 kg body weight

    8. Advantage

    Advantage

Advantage for Dogs uses imidacloprid as the active ingredient and is applied as a spot-on monthly. It kills fleas on contact within 20 minutes.

    Pros

    • Fast Kill- 20 minutes
    • Ease to administer
    • Safe for small puppies from weaning
    • Safe for pregnant and lactating dogs

    Cons

    • Doesn't kill ticks

    9. Capstar

    Capstar

Capstar is a fast-acting product that kills fleas but has no ongoing effect. The active ingredient in this product is nitenpyram. Capstar can be given to dogs as young as 4 weeks old. It starts working within 30 minutes of use and the tablets are small enough for pups to easily ingest. It's available without a prescription and it's great for small or severe infestations.

    Pros

    • Fast flea-killing action- 30 minutes
    • Safe from 4 weeks of age

    Cons

    • Knock-down treatment only- no lasting effect
    • Need to combine with a long-lasting product for flea infestations or give daily.
    • Not for dogs under 0.5kg
    • No tick coverage

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing The Best Flea Treatment for Dogs

The best treatment for your dog will depend on a few factors and your veterinarian is best placed to make a recommendation for your pet.

While fleas are annoying, preventative treatments take on a new level of importance if you happen to live in an area where the paralysis tick is prevalent; mainly the east coast. If you live in a paralysis tick area make sure your chosen treatment covers paralysis ticks too as this will prevent costly vet visits and may even save your dogs life if they were to pick up a tick.

You may need a tick-repelling product if you are in a region where E. Canis has been reported. This includes northern areas of Western Australia and South Australia, northwestern Queensland and all of the Northern Territory. This bacteria is spread by the brown dog tick when it bites your dog; so something is really needed to stop the tick biting in the first place. It is recommended to use a collar and a chewable/spot-on treatment in these areas.

Also consider your dog's age, whether they like to take chewable tablets and whether they are pregnant or lactating. In addition to flea treatments your dog will need intestinal worming and heartworm prevention. All-in-one treatments are available but are not factored into this article.

No matter which type of flea medicine you choose, you’ll want to make sure that you get the appropriate one for your dog’s size. Flea medicines are based on your dog’s weight, and getting the right one for your dog’s weight will ensure it is effective.

Second place went to Frontline plus for killing fleas in all life stages very quickly and value when using it for fleas alone. And in third place is the very convenient Bravecto Spot-On which only needs to be applied every 6 months.

Hopefully the list of pros and cons helps you to make the best decision for your pet.
