Australian Shepherds of all sizes are beautiful, agile, and graceful. They have stunning coats of fur that are soft and luxurious. It is well known that full-sized Australian Shepherds shed frequently. However, do mini American Shepherds shed as much? The short answer is yes, they do. That said, their bodies are much smaller than standard-sized Australian Shepherd dogs, so they do not leave behind as much hair and dander. Here is everything that you need to know about the mini American Australian Shepherd and shedding.

How Much Do Mini Australian Shepherds Shed?

Mini Australian Shepherds shed all year long, just like their larger counterparts do. They shed less frequently during the fall and winter months, but they tend to shed excessively during the spring and summer months. The shedding is not always apparent, especially for those who live in large homes and who hire maid services.

However, those who live in apartment settings or who do not have help to clean up will likely notice the shed hairs of a miniature Australian Shepherd. Shedding is an everyday part of living with this dog. There is nothing hypoallergenic about this breed, so they are not suitable for those who have serious allergies to fur and/or dander.

Why Do Australian Shepherds Shed?

The biggest reason that Australian Shepherds shed is to stay cool. They must get rid of the excess fur or they could overheat while spending time under the sun. These dogs also shed to get rid of unnecessary fur. They are constantly growing new fur, so the old stuff must go somewhere. Unfortunately, that old hair ends up on our floors and furniture. Although these dogs shed frequently, they do not ever look like they are losing fur. There is always more than enough fur to compensate for the stuff that is lost.

What Can Be Done About the Shedding?

There is not much that can be done about the shedding of an Australian Shepherd. However, there are a few things that you can do to keep the shed hair from building up in your home. The best way to ensure that your house does not end up looking like a furry dwelling is to brush or comb your miniature Australian Shepherd daily.

Do this task outside to ensure that the fur that you release from your pooch’s skin does not end up inside your home. It is important to sweep and/or vacuum several times a week to keep the floors and furniture from getting too furry. If your dog’s hair is on the longer side, consider getting their coat trimmed once a month or so to reduce shedding.

Final Thoughts

Australian Shepherds are full of fur, even the mini ones. They shed all year long and require daily brushing to stay neat and clean. Luckily, it is easy to get into a short daily routine that will keep the fur of your mini Australian Shepherd from piling up inside your home.
