From the squashed face and droopy eyes to the puppy-like, almost goofy attitude, the Boxer is a truly unique breed. Originally raised for bull baiting and as a guardian dog, the modern Boxer is a loyal and loving family companion that is fiercely loyal and a ton of fun to have around. It will get along with all family members and is especially good with children that are old enough to join in the Boxer’s games.

Its character has seen the Boxer gain a fervent following of fans, and National Boxer Dog Day, which is celebrated on January 17th every year and started in 2020, is a celebration of the breed’s unique traits and characteristics.

About the Boxer Dog

The Boxer originates from Germany, where it was bred for bull baiting in the 19th Century. The breed has also been used as a butcher’s helper, guiding and keeping control of cattle at the slaughterhouse. The breed is still used as a working dog in some cases but is also a very popular family companion dog because it is loving, affectionate, and loyal to its family. Its puppylike attitude and friendly nature also mean it can get along with other animals as well.

The biggest demands that a Boxer has are companionship and regular exercise. Boxers can suffer separation anxiety if left alone for too long and they can become destructive if they don’t get enough exercise.

Although they don’t tend to bark a lot, Boxers do tend to grumble and growl, which they use as a method of communication. And, if a Boxer does bark excessively, there is usually a good reason for it and the owner is advised to find the cause.

National Boxer Dog Day

Such is the popularity of the breed that it now has its own national day. The Facebook dog owner group, The Woof Book, established National Boxer Dog Day in 2020 during its drive to establish national days for various breeds. The day is celebrated on 17th January and as the group is international, there are events in various countries around the world. Typically, Boxer owners get together for an organized walk, and non-owners are also welcome to share their love of the breed.

You can also find posts and photos, posted on the day, on social media with the hashtag #NationalBoxerDay.

The 4 Facts About Boxer Dogs

1. They Do Very Well in Dog Shows

Although the Boxer is prone to moments of madness and they love to play, Boxers can be trained and can do very well in dog shows. In 1947, 1949, 1951, and 1970, the breed won Westminster’s Best in Show award.

2. They Love Agility and Canine Sports

Boxers have a lot of energy, and they love to play. They can also be well trained, with some effort and plenty of consistent training. This combination means that they are also very effective in canine sports and agility. Agility and canine sports provide an efficient way to keep a Boxer mentally and physically stimulated, while also building a bond between you and your dog.

3. They Are Good Family Dogs

Their love of companionship, playful attitude, and caring nature make the Boxer dog a good breed for families with children. They especially like children who are old enough and willing to play, but they will love younger children, too. If you do have children and are getting a Boxer, you will want to ensure that one of the first actions you teach is the “Down” command.

4. They Make Very Good Service Dogs

Because they are intelligent and love to please their humans, Boxers can also make very good service dogs. They are used as guide dogs and hearing dogs and are also used by police and armed forces around the world.

Final Thoughts

The Boxer breed has become one of the most popular companion pet breeds in the U.S. as well as in other countries. It is intelligent, energetic, and playful. It thrives on and demands attention, but this does mean that the Boxer can suffer separation anxiety if left alone for too long. National Boxer Dog Day is a day to celebrate the breed and is celebrated every year on January 17th.
