As you might have guessed from its name, the German Shepherd Jindo mix is a dog that’s part Jindo and part German Shepherd. These “designer” dogs have interesting attributes and are known to be calm, low-maintenance canines with above-average intelligence. If you’d like to know more about this mesmerizing mixed breed and whether it’s a good choice as a pet, read on!

Breed Overview

Height:

19–26 inches

Weight:

40–80 pounds

Lifespan:

7–15 years

Colors:

Black, black & cream, black & tan, black & silver, brindle, fawn, gray, white, and several others

Suitable for:

Families with older children, those looking for a low-shedding, intelligent watchdog

Temperament:

Generally friendly, affectionate, and low-key, although their personalities can differ significantly

It’s difficult to say exactly what kind of dog you’ll get with a German Shepherd Jindo mix. For example, German Shepherds are very affectionate and get along well with children and most other dogs. Jindos are more standoffish and are okay with older kids but not so good with other dogs. There are several other notable differences between the breeds, including openness to strangers and their adaptability level. In short, it all depends on the puppy you adopt. However, combining the two breeds has resulted in some very fine dogs.

German Shepherd Jindo Mix Puppies

Finding a breeder in your area of the U.S. who is breeding German Shepherd Jindo mixes might not be easy. You can also go to your local shelter and cross your fingers that you find a German Shepherd Jindo mix there. The chance you’ll find one, frankly, is pretty low. However, if you volunteer at your local shelter and get in good with the staff, they will likely be more than willing to call you if a German Shepherd Jindo mix shows up. Of course, if you know someone whose German Shepherd or Jindo has mated with the other breed, adopting one of the resulting puppies might also be possible.

Temperament & Intelligence of the German Shepherd Jindo Mix

Combining these two outstanding dog breeds can result in some very interesting canines. German Shepherds are typically very outgoing, social, friendly, and affectionate dogs that need several hours a day of activity to stimulate their minds and body. Jindos, while not bad dogs by any means are less social, don’t take to strangers easily, and have less energy than their German Shepherd cousins.

You’ll usually get a dog that’s friendly but a little shy, has a moderate level of energy, gets along well with most people, and needs some (but not endless) attention. If you’re lucky, your German Shepherd Jindo mix will be a sociable dog that loves being around you and your family, gets along well with people and other pets, and has a high appetite for play and interaction.

As with any mixed breed, all German Shepherd Jindo puppies will be unique and have their own distinctive personalities. Whatever that happens to be, raising your German Shepherd Jindo mix in a loving, caring home and socializing it very well will help your pet become a well-adjusted, friendly, and lovable dog.

Are These Dogs Good for Families?

Depending on the specific attributes and traits a German Shepherd Jindo mix is born with, the chance they will be good dogs for families is quite high. Both breeds have higher-than-average playfulness levels and lower-than-average barking levels. Both dogs don’t need a lot of grooming, but the German Shepherd sheds quite a bit.

The Jindo and German Shepherd don’t get along extremely well with other pets, but the German Shepherd gets higher marks in this area. If raised in a loving home and socialized well, the chance your puppy will be perfect for your family will be much higher.

Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?

A German Shepherd Jindo mix may get along well with other pets, but you should know that, with the Jindo, getting along with other dogs isn't one of their strong points. Regardless of the dog’s personality, the German Shepherd Jindo mix puppy must be introduced and socialized with other pets while it’s still young.

Things to Know When Owning a German Shepherd Jindo Mix:

Food & Diet Requirements

As with all dogs, you must give your German Shepherd Jindo high-quality dog food with plenty of protein and healthy fats. Veterinarians recommend that you choose a dog food with at least one meat protein as its first or second ingredient. Also, choosing a dog food that doesn't use artificial additives or fillers is preferred. Lastly, to prevent obesity, always follow the 90/10 rule for snacking. This rule states that dogs should be given 90% dog food daily and only 10% treats.

Exercise

The German Shepherd and the Jindo have high energy levels, but the German Shepherd’s energy level is off the charts. Your German Shepherd Jindo mix should get at least 2 hours of exercise each day, including walking, playing, and training. Both parents also need a high level of mental stimulation, so providing games and toys is a must, especially if you aren't spending all day with your dog.

Training

The German Shepherd is an incredibly trainable dog and is famously used as a bomb-sniffing and drug dog, among other jobs. While German Shepherds rate 5 out of 5 in trainability, Jindos only rate 3 out of 5. Your German Shepherd Jindo mix will probably be easy to train and eager to learn new commands but will need a firm hand and lots of patience. Some might be stubborn or easily bored, so diligence and patience are necessary.

Grooming

The Jindo and the German Shepherd shed about the same and need moderate coat grooming. Both have double coats that are medium in length and should be easy to brush. As for brushing, once or twice a week will suffice. Like all dogs, brushing your German Shepherd Jindo’s teeth once or twice a week and clipping their nails regularly is necessary.

Health and Conditions

Because of its size, the German Shepherd isn't the most long-lived dog breed. However, they are generally healthy dogs that have few congenital issues. The same can be said for Jindos, but they live longer because they’re about 25% smaller than German Shepherds. Most of the health issues that your German Shepherd Jindo mix might have will probably come from its German Shepherd parent.

Minor Conditions

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Eye issues

Serious Conditions

  • Elbow and hip dysplasia
  • Degenerative myelopathy
  • Bloat

Male vs Female

There are few differences between male and female German Shepherd Jindo mixes. Males are bigger than females and generally more friendly, while females are a bit more aggressive. Also, females tend to live about 15% longer than males. It's best to have your German Shepherd Jindo spayed or neutered since the procedure will typically lengthen their life by 10 to 15%.

3 Little-Known Facts About the German Shepherd Jindo Mix

1. German Shepherd Jindo Mixes Almost Always Have Pointed Ears

That’s because both parents have them, too.

2. They’re Known as Jindo Shepherds

You can call them German Shepherd Jindos if you like, but many call them Jindo Shepherds.

3. German Shepherd Jindo Mixes Are Known for Their Confidence and Alertness

That’s unsurprising considering their parent breeds, but individual dogs can vary significantly.

Final Thoughts

There is no denying that the German Shepherd Jindo mix is a fascinating crossbreed and makes a very attractive adult dog. If you're lucky and get one that inherited the best traits from their parent breeds, you'll have a dog that's loyal, highly intelligent, affectionate, and, if socialized well, will get along with your other pets, friends, and family.

We recommend taking your time when searching for a German Shepherd Jindo mix and only using a reputable breeder or shelter. Whatever you decide, we hope you adopt a German Shepherd Jindo mix that turns into the perfect dog and brings much joy, love, fun, and energy into your life.
