If you’re on the hunt for something to do and places to go in Alabama, Orange Beach is a popular choice. Whether you’re looking for amazing food, nature walks, watersports, championship golfing, or just digging your toes into the soft, white sand, Orange Beach is a family-friendly place to spend your next vacation or day trip. But what if your dog is coming with you? Is Orange Beach dog-friendly? Well, that depends on whether you’re talking about Orange Beach, the city, or the beach itself. Unfortunately for all you dog-lovers, dogs are not permitted on Gulf Beaches, including Orange Beach.

Are Dogs Allowed at Orange Beach?

With a population of less than 9,000 that can reach 100K during peak tourist season,¹ Orange Beach is also home to thousands of species of birds, mammals, and reptiles, including dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, and the endangered Alabama beach mouse.² In fact, the Gulf of Mexico is one of the most abundant and diverse habitats on the planet, both in the water and around it. For that reason, dogs are not allowed on Orange Beach or any Gulf beach area.

According to the City of Orange Beach Coastal Resources: “Gulf beach area refers to the sandy shoreline area abutting the Gulf, characterized by low relief, generally of gentle slope and some vegetation, extending into the abutting waters to a distance of 1,000 feet seaward of the mean high tide line, including bays, inlets, canals, and the Islands of Perdido.“

We know that dogs are playful and fun-loving, but even the most well-behaved pup can unintentionally cause stress to local wildlife by digging in their sandy habitat, gleefully chasing birds, or even just barking. This can threaten the survival of shoreline birds, sea turtles, and other protected species. So unfortunately, if you’re planning to spend the day at the beach, you’ll need to leave your four-legged friend at home.

Where Can I Take My Dog in Orange Beach?

Whilst the beautiful Gulf beach area is off limits to dogs, there are plenty of places for you to explore with your best bud by your side. What About Service Dogs?

Service dogs are allowed on all public beaches, including Orange Beach, but this does not extend to emotional support animals (ESAs). The official city policy states:

“Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title III, individuals with disabilities may bring trained service dogs to any public beach. Service dogs perform specific tasks related to their owner’s disability. 

Emotional support, comfort, and therapy animals are not considered service dogs and are not allowed on pet-restricted beaches. Service dogs must be under control at all times; failure to do so, especially if protected wildlife is disturbed, may result in removal and citation.”

Be sure to obey all city ordinances and leash laws at all times. The City of Orange Beach requires all dogs to be leashed at all times, and the law is strictly enforced.

The City of Orange Beach is a fantastic spot to explore and enjoy, but if you’re bringing your dog along for the ride, it’s important to know that dogs are not allowed on Gulf Beaches, including Orange Beach.
