Every cat parent understands that when it comes to the day-to-day life at home, cats often like to do things on their own terms. However, instead of being particularly demanding, your kitty is probably snoozing. Cats sleep about 15 hours each day on average.

But when it comes to sharing a bed with their human counterpart, your pet probably prefers sleeping at the foot of the bed instead of near the headboard. This seems like strange behavior for such an independent little companion. For your cat, there’s always good reasoning behind every choice they make.

Here are five reasons why your cat sleeps at your feet:

The 5 Reasons Cats Sleep at Your Feet

1. Easy Escape Route

When it comes to survival, surveying their turf is the name of the game. In the wild, a feral cat will choose resting spots that allow awareness of surroundings and quick access to escape routes. In your bedroom, the best way to keep an eye on their surroundings is for your cat to lie at the foot of the bed. This may help them feel more secure and able to move away quickly if needed.

2. Scent Familiarity

Cats rely heavily on scent to feel comfortable and secure. Your bed carries your scent, and your feet often have a stronger, more concentrated smell. Sleeping near your feet may help your cat feel more relaxed and at ease.

3. Cool is Comfy

To your cat, your body temperature can feel very warm. On top of the warm blankets and sheets, all their fur can sometimes become too warm, especially under heavy covers or in warmer conditions. To stay comfortable, your pet might choose to sleep at the edge of the bed where it is cooler. The further away your cat is from your core (your abdomen and chest), the cooler she’ll stay.

Finding a bed that your cat truly enjoys can be a challenge. Our Hepper Nest Bed features an enticing, portable design that encourages cats to explore and curl up in. Created with a comfy bowl shape to offer maximum support and a self-warming fleece insert, you’ll have a hard time getting your cat up from their daily naps.

4. More Space

You may be a restless sleeper. All that tossing and turning can make it tough for your cat to get some shut-eye. If they are smart, they will move down to the foot of the bed to grab more space and more sleep.

5. Habit and Routine

Cats are creatures of habit. If your cat has found a comfortable sleeping spot at the foot of the bed, she’s likely to return to it night after night. Once a routine is established, many cats will stick with it as long as it continues to feel safe and comfortable.

Final Thoughts

Your cat chooses to sleep at your feet for a variety of reasons. Whether they are seeking comfort, familiarity, thermoregulation, or need their space, it is always nice to know your pet feels comfortable enough to share a bed with you. If you don’t love sleeping with your kitty, you can always give them their own bed. Place it on the floor near your bed or on a comfortable couch. Sprinkle it with catnip to entice your pet to use it. This way, you each will have a place to call your own.
