Does PetSmart Allow Dogs? In-Store Pet Policy (2026 Update)

PetSmart

PetSmart is one of the largest pet supply chains in the United States. Many people love perusing the shelves to find the latest goodies for their beloved dogs. From treats and toys and specialty foods, PetSmart has it all. But are dogs allowed in PetSmart? You may have seen dogs in PetSmart before. Are they there for an appointment, or can you bring your dog to PetSmart at any time? The good news is that you can bring your dog to PetSmart at any time as long as you follow some simple rules.

Here is everything you need to know about bringing your dog to PetSmart.

PetSmart’s In-Store Pet Policy

PetSmart has a very generous in-store pet policy, and it is not hard to see why. Since they sell items for pets, it only makes sense for them to allow you to bring your pet into the store. PetSmart allows any domesticated pet into the store that they sell or sell items for. That includes dogs—any dog. That is good news for dog owners who have been hesitant to bring their doggo into PetSmart. You won’t face any judgment, and there are few restrictions outside of some common sense rules.

PetSmart allows all of the following animals in their stores:

  • Domestic dogs
  • Cats
  • Birds
  • Any small animals and reptiles sold at PetSmart (guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas, gerbils, mice, rats, certain geckos, bearded dragons, specific types of snakes, specific types of frogs)
  • Other non-venomous reptiles
  • Ferrets
  • Rabbits
  • Sugar gliders
  • Pot-bellied pigs

Many people believe that dogs in PetSmart are there for a specific reason. PetSmart can host some extra services for live dogs, such as obedience training classes, grooming, boarding, and veterinary care. Pets with an appointment at any service inside of a PetSmart are always welcome, but you don’t need to have an appointment to bring your dog into the store. You can bring any well-behaved dog into PetSmart at any time. But there are some simple rules that need to be followed in order to have a smooth in-store experience.

Restrictions

When you bring your dog to PetSmart, you must follow two key rules. First, the dogs must be safely contained. That means they have to be either leashed or crated at all times when in the store. Second, your dog must have an up-to-date vaccine record. You don’t want your dog to spread disease to other dogs or catch a disease from an unvaccinated dog that might be nearby. Enforcement of these rules and final discretion is up to the PetSmart manager to enforce.

Any dogs that are being a nuisance or causing a problem could be flagged by store management, and you might be asked to leave. This is uncommon, but it can happen.

The fine print of the official PetSmart policy reads as follows:

“PetSmart reserves the right to prohibit any pet from being in a PetSmart location for any reason, and PetSmart may modify this policy, or any portion thereof, at any time, without notice.”

That means it is in your best interest to make sure your dog is securely leashed and vaccinated before entering any PetSmart, just to be on the safe side.

Conclusion

Does PetSmart allow dogs? The answer to that question is a resounding yes. Unlike other businesses, PetSmart does not have any breed or weight restrictions. As long as your dog is leashed, well-behaved, and vaccinated, they will be more than welcome into any PetSmart at any time. This can be a fun way to get your dog out of the house. It can also be a good way to try out toys, leashes, and other products with your pooch.
