Live From the Litter Box: National Pet Month Is Here & It’s Time to Celebrate!

Share

LFTLB National Pet Month 2025

We’re halfway through May, and that means we’re halfway through National Pet Month! Don’t worry, you still have plenty of time to celebrate the cats in your life. We’ve gathered some fun ideas to help you enjoy the rest of this pet-centric month.

Support Your Favorite Cat Organization

A great way to celebrate National Pet Month (even if you don’t have pets) is to support a cat organization. This might mean donating money to their efforts, but it could also involve volunteering, dropping off much-needed pet supplies, or just helping spread the word on social media.

Some great organizations to consider supporting:

  • ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals): Famously the first animal welfare organization founded in the United States, the ASPCA supports shelters, clinics, and rescues across the country.
  • Alley Cat Allies: This non-profit focuses on improving the lives of all cats, including pets, strays, and feral cats. They collaborate on programs like TNR (Trap Neuter Release), advocate for laws to protect cats, and connect pet owners to resources like animal food banks and low-cost clinics.
  • My Grandfather’s Cat: We recently wrote about the amazing work this organization does to help seniors and terminally ill people find loving homes for their pets. You can donate to support the program or even become a virtual volunteer, helping guide adopters through the process from the comfort of your home!
  • Your local animal shelter or humane society: Many shelters struggle with overcrowding and low funding. You can help by volunteering in person, dropping off pet supplies, or donating money. Just reach out to your local animal organizations to see how you can contribute!

Make a Special Cat-Safe Treat

A special treat can make every celebration extra fun for cats and humans. Why not whip up a little cat-safe blueberry ice cream or some no-bake tuna balls? Or go big and make up a seafood cake to share with all of the cats in your life.

Break Out a New Toy or Game

Regular playtime is crucial for keeping cats active and engaged. National Pet Month is a great excuse to buy (or DIY) a new play mouse, wand toy, or scratching post.

Looking for toys that cater to the many needs of your cat? The Hepper Hi-lo Cat Scratcher is one of our favorite cat products. Its clever thee-angle design offers multiple ways for your cat to climb, stretch, and exercise. Made of a sturdy plywood base and a replacement cardboard insert, this scratcher is an option that can be enjoyed by cats for years to come. If your cat requires a little encouragement for self-play, the Hepper Catnip Mice Toy Set is a fantastic choice. Made with natural, bite-resistant hessian fabric and filled with organic catnip. Cats can satisfy their natural prey instincts while getting the physical activity they need to thrive.

  • Make Sure Your Cat is Safe & Healthy

In between all the fun activities, this is a great time to make sure all is well with your cat. Take them for a checkup with your vet and make sure their microchip is registered with your current address and contact information. If you don’t have pet insurance, this could also be a good time to do some research and decide if it’s right for you.

This may not be the most exciting way to spend National Pet Month, but keeping your cat safe and healthy is well worth the time!

    Plan a Special Outing

Not all cats will enjoy going on adventures, but if you have a curious kitty, you could plan a walk, hike, or car ride together. Make sure you have the right equipment first, though – a well-fitting harness and ventilated, comfortable cat backpack or carrier will help you keep your cat safe no matter where you go.

    Adopt or Foster a Cat

Have room for a new cat? Now could be the perfect time to adopt a cat from your local animal shelter or rescue.

Fostering is also an amazing way to give back if you aren’t ready to commit to a full adoption. Check with your local organizations to see what the requirements are and whether there are any cats in need of a temporary home.

    Happy National Pet Month!
