Owning a puppy is a lot like having a new human baby. She’s adorable, needs a ton of care, and you’ll be inundated with conflicting information about what’s good for her.
Whether or not to use rawhide as a treat (for the puppy, not the baby) is one issue that you may get conflicting information on. Some people argue against giving them to dogs at all, saying they’re full of chemicals and could cause digestive issues. Others say they provide a safe and healthy alternative to gnawing on your shoes.
The fact of the matter is, both sides have a point. Rawhides can be a wonderful diversion for your pup — but only if you give her a high-quality one.
In the reviews below, we’ll show you which ones can be trusted, so that you can entertain your new dog without sacrificing peace of mind in the process.

The 9 Best Rawhides for Puppies
1. MON2SUN Dog Rawhide Rolls – Best Overall
At 6.5 inches long, MON2SUN Rolls are long enough to keep your dog entertained for hours, without being so large as to overwhelm her. They aren’t especially thick, either, allowing your pooch to get her mouth around the whole thing rather easily.
Even better than the size, however, is the fact that they don’t contain any artificial colors or preservatives to upset her developing stomach. They can help scrape tartar and plaque off her teeth while developing jaw muscles as well.
You get quite a few rolls in each package, which should keep your dog occupied for a long time. Our only issue is the fact that they’re not made in America, but the quality is high enough that it shouldn’t be an issue.
All in all, MON2SUN Rolls are some of the best puppy rawhides on the market, and they provide plenty of value for the price.
- Size is perfect for young dogs
- No artificial flavors or preservatives
- Helpful for removing plaque and tartar
- Will build strong jaw muscles
- Lots of rawhide in each package
- Not made in the USA
2. Rawhide Express Natural Braided Donut – Best Value
The Rawhide Express Natural Braided Donut is an excellent value for dogs that love to chew and is our value pick for best rawhide for puppies. Its unique braided ring design provides a longer-lasting chewing experience than many traditional rawhide bones while helping satisfy your dog’s natural chewing instincts. The braided construction also encourages dogs to work at different angles, helping scrape away plaque and tartar as they chew.
Made from natural beefhide without artificial preservatives, this chew is available in a generous size that’s well suited for medium and large breeds. Many owners find the donut shape makes it easier for dogs to grip with their paws while chewing. As with all rawhide products, supervision is recommended, and the chew should be discarded once it becomes small enough to present a choking hazard.
- Long-lasting braided design
- Helps support dental health
- Natural beefhide ingredients
- Easy for dogs to hold
- Great value for larger chewers
- Requires supervision while chewing
- Size may vary slightly between pieces
3. Canine Chews Premium Beefhide Rawhide – Premium Choice
The Canine Chews Premium Beefhide Rawhide is a premium chew made from high-quality American beefhide to provide dogs with a satisfying, long-lasting chewing experience. Its thick construction helps keep aggressive chewers occupied while supporting healthy teeth and gums by reducing plaque and tartar buildup through natural chewing action.
Made without artificial colors or preservatives, these rawhide chews are available in several sizes to accommodate different breeds. They’re ideal for dogs with strong chewing instincts and can provide hours of entertainment when offered appropriately. Because of their dense construction, they’re best suited for experienced chewers and should always be given under supervision.
- Made from premium American beefhide
- Thick, long-lasting chew
- Supports dental health
- No artificial colors or preservatives
- Available in multiple sizes
- Not suitable for very small puppies
- Supervision is recommended during chewing
4. Raw Paws Dog Rawhide Sticks
These chews have been tightly compressed, making them small enough for most dogs to gnaw on with ease. That also helps pack the flavor in, ensuring they stay interesting to your dog until each one is completely gone.
Raw Paws aren’t just tasty, either — they’re also high in glucosamine and chondroitin, which can help promote healthy joints. There’s a fair amount of protein inside as well, which your pup can use to build lean, strong muscles.
However, the fact that they’re so tightly compressed means they’re rather small, so if your dog is bigger than 50 pounds or so, they might not last long. You may also notice a few sharp shards break off as your dog crunches away, so be sure to snatch those up immediately to ensure she doesn’t injure herself.
All in all, Raw Paws are high-quality, healthy treats, but you may be frustrated at how quickly they disappear, which is why they’re stuck at #4 on this list.
- Good for smaller breeds
- Filled with glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health
- High in protein
- Extremely flavorful
- Bigger dogs will make short work of them
- May break off in sharp pieces
5. Pet Factory Puppy Beefhide Roll
Pet Factory Beefhide Rolls are made almost exclusively of protein and fiber, so feeding them to your dog shouldn’t cause her to pack on the pounds.
While they’re made of beef, they’re actually peanut butter-flavored. Most dogs go crazy for anything that tastes like peanut butter, so you should have little difficulty convincing your pup to give it a try. Unfortunately, that also means that they use artificial flavoring, which isn’t the best for your dog’s health.
Still, Pet Factory Beefhide Rolls are made of 99% digestible material, so your mutt should be able to break them down easily. Their size is in kind of a no-man’s-land, though, as smaller dogs will likely have trouble getting their jaws around them while larger breeds will tear them up in just a few minutes.
Like the Better Belly above, these are best viewed as a quickly-vanishing reward rather than a long-term activity.
- Made of mostly protein and fiber
- Delicious peanut butter flavor
- Easily digestible
- Include artificial flavors
- Too big for smaller dogs
- Tend to be eaten quickly
6. Better Belly Dog Rawhides
Better Belly rawhides come in an assortment of sizes and flavors, so you should be able to satisfy the pickiest of pooches (or a whole house full of them). You can feed your dog chicken liver, pork, or even water buffalo.
These chews are made of extremely thin strips of rawhide, with the collagen fibers inside already broken down to a certain extent. That allows your dog to digest these quickly, with less risk of causing a blockage in the intestinal tract.
However, that also reduces the amount of time each one will last, and the exotic flavors give some pooches stomach issues. They’re not the cheapest treats on the market, either, so you might be upset to see one disappear in fifteen minutes.
We still like the Better Belly rawhides, but we feel they should be used more as a treat to be quickly devoured rather than as a way to occupy your dog for hours on end.
- Available in a variety of shapes and flavors
- Tend to be digested quickly
- Little risk of creating a blockage
- Don’t last very long
- May cause diarrhea
- Expensive for what you get
7. Pawant Puppy Wrapped Rawhide Sticks
Like the Pet Cuisine Rawhide Stix above, these Pawant Wrapped Sticks are extremely small and wrapped in dried chicken. They’re also low in fat, with a respectable amount of protein, but they have their fair share of problems, too.
The most glaring issue is the use of sorbitol. Sorbitol is a sugar substitute that also functions as a laxative, so don’t be surprised if you have a few house-breaking accidents after feeding one of these to your pup. You’ll find more salt and crude ash in the ingredients list than we’d like, too.
They’re also not intended for dogs less than three months old, so there’s a relatively short window in which you can feed these to your mutt. After all, once they get to a certain size, each stick will disappear in just a few chomps, making them hardly worth the effort.
Still, your dog is likely to enjoy every bite of these Pawant Wrapped Sticks; we just can’t find any way to recommend them over some of the healthier alternatives listed here.
- Dogs enjoy the flavor
- Low in fat
- Sorbitol causes diarrhea
- Lots of salt and crude ash
- Not for dogs less than 3 months old
- Will be eaten quickly
- Not ideal for larger dogs
8. Hotspot Pets Rawhide Dog Chew
Each bag of rawhide chews from Hotspot Pets has quite a few treats in it, each of which is fairly big and thick. However, the size is a bit misleading, as they don’t last as long as you’d expect from the looks of them.
The knots on the end are especially weak points. Most pups can gnaw them off in a few minutes, and you’ll need to monitor them to make sure they don’t swallow the knot whole.
The rawhide itself is very thin, and while we like that they don’t have any artificial flavors, dogs don’t seem to find these as tasty as some of the other options listed above. While it may seem like that may cause each one to last longer, that doesn’t do you much good if the reason why they’re lasting longer is that your dog won’t touch them.
There aren’t very many red flags on these chews from Hotspot Pets — no questionable ingredients or glaring dangers that we can point to — but they’re just not quite up to the standard set by the treats ranked above them.
- No artificial flavors
- Good amount of treats in each bag
- Thin material
- Knots can be swallowed whole
- Can be torn through quickly
- Dogs seem indifferent to the taste
- May not hold pups’ interest
Summary: How to Choose the Best Rawhides for Puppies
If you want to keep your new puppy entertained for hours without putting her health at risk, MON2SUN Rolls are your best bet. They’re made using natural ingredients, and they’re ideal for building strong, healthy teeth and jaws (not to mention keeping your couches safe from those same teeth and jaws).
For owners who are not sure if their dogs will take to rawhides at all, Rawhide Express Natural Braided Donut offers an inexpensive way to test the waters, and most dogs find them absolutely delicious.
Rawhides are simple treats, yet finding high-quality options can be confusing and needlessly complicated. We hope these reviews have made it easier for you to find the best rawhide for your pup, so you and your puppy can both enjoy the peace that a nice, tough piece of cowhide can provide.
