Irish Setter Overview

The Irish Setter is a medium-sized dog breed that originated in Ireland in the 19th century and was one of the first nine breeds that were registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) back in 1878. This attractive dog breed has much to offer in terms of appearance and temperament.

Physical Characteristics & Appearance

The Irish Setter is an active dog breed that has an elegant body with long, silky hair that comes in different colors such as red and white. This dog breed can also have the two colors mixed to form a pattern. The Irish Setters' ears are long and droop down to their snout, which is long and pointed.

These dogs are known for their shiny coat that catches the light and appears longer on their ears and tails. The Irish Setter grows to an adult size of 2 feet tall, with females being slightly smaller than males.

Since the Irish Settler has such a long coat, they will need to be regularly groomed to make sure that their fur is free of any tangles and knots, which includes regular brushing and washing to keep up their appearance.

Temperament

The Irish setter is described as being affectionate, energetic, lively, independent, and very friendly which is why this dog breed makes such a good family-orientated pet. They are full of activity and love to explore their environment.

The Irish Setter is known for being very active, which means that they will need plenty of exercise in the form of toys, human interaction, walks, and can even be taken on a run with you.

They are highly intelligent dogs that enjoy company but can also be left to play and explore on their own. They will need a large, secure yard to stay active in as the Irish Setter enjoys running and playing in a spacey area.

You will find that most Irish Setters are great with children and can be very protective over those they love. Irish Setters can be big barkers, especially when they are bored, stressed, or seeking attention from their owners.

The Golden Retriever is a playful dog breed that originates from Scotland and was registered by the AKC in 1925. It is now one of the most popular dogs to own in America. Golden Retrievers are great with obedience training and come in a variety of different coat colors.

Physical Characteristics & Appearance

The Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog breed that has a long, thick coat that comes in different shades such as dark and light gold, standard gold, and even creamy white. They have down-turned ears with an upturned nose and a medium-sized snout with a longer upper lip.

They have a rigid back with long legs, with male Golden Retrievers being slightly larger than females who have a rounder abdomen. The Golden Retriever has a slightly longer body than height with a deep chest and ears that reach their black button eyes. This dog breed has rounded feet that help them to be strong footed with thick paw pads and curling nails that help them to run.

Temperament

The Golden Retriever is a friendly, confident, and intelligent dog breed that makes a trustworthy companion. These dogs make great family pets as they are easy to train and form strong bonds with their family members.

The Golden Retriever is good with obedience training, and they are highly intelligent which allows them to be trained fairly quickly as they are always willing to learn. Golden Retrievers are energetic and enjoy playtime with their owners, going on walks, and exploring their environment, which makes them best suited to homes with a large yard to give them a place to exercise.

This dog breed can easily become bored if they are not stimulated in their environment which makes it important to take time to play and take them on regular walks.

What Are the Differences Between Irish Settlers & Golden Retrievers?

Both the Irish Setter and Golden Retriever are medium-sized dog breeds with a long, fine coat and a similar temperament. The Irish Setter is slightly bigger than the Golden Retriever and has slightly higher grooming and exercise requirements.

While the Golden Retriever needs plenty of socialization to help prevent them from becoming bored and depressed, the Irish Setter can be more independent and does not mind being left alone for a few hours if they have something to keep them busy.

Both dogs are great for families, however, Golden Retrievers seem to be more playful and enjoy interacting with their owners, whereas the Irish Setter is known for being great with children.

The Golden Retriever is available in more color varieties than the Irish Setter, which has either the classic deep red color or cream in their coat. Both dog breeds are loyal and loving and have a similar lifespan of 10 to 12 years on average.

Which Breed Is Right for You?

These are two great dog breeds that have a similar temperament, and both make loyal, playful, and affectionate canine companions. If you are looking for a medium-sized dog that has long, silky fur with long droopy ears and is highly active and eager to explore, then the Irish Setter might be the better-suited dog breed for you. However, they have slightly higher grooming and exercise requirements than Golden Retrievers.

If you want a playful and sociable medium-sized dog that is happy to be around their family and you do not mind their shedding, then the Golden Retriever may be the better dog breed for you.
