Samoyed dog in the summer forest

If you have your heart set on the beautiful Samoyed, you’re not alone. These fluffy, white sled dogs are gentle and energetic pups that thrive on being active and spending time with their families.

If you’re wondering how much you’ll need to spend on a Samoyed, you’ve come to the right place. Of course, it isn’t just about buying the dog—it’s all about keeping them happy and healthy throughout their lifetime. After the initial expenses, you will have to spend between $60–$300+ per month. So, we’re going to break down the costs of the possible one-time and monthly expenditures of bringing a Samoyed into your life.

We hope this will make the decision much easier for you when you see the possible costs of this amazing dog.

Samoyed Price: One-Time Costs

The one-time costs for a Samoyed are actually buying your new puppy or adult dog and some of the initial items you’ll need when you bring them home.

We’ll go over the costs of adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue, as well as how much you might pay for a Samoyed puppy from a reputable breeder. This might be the most expensive purchase, but it doesn’t really compare when you consider the costs of owning a dog for the next 10 to 15 years.

Lastly, we’ll have a quick look at some of the supplies you’ll need to have in place when you bring your puppy home—items such as a dog crate and bed, food dishes, and a leash.

Free Samoyeds

It’s pretty unlikely that you’ll find a Samoyed puppy for free unless you’re lucky enough to have a friend, neighbor, or relative that breeds Samoyeds and doesn’t mind giving you one of their puppies. Having said that, finding a free puppy will usually also mean that the puppy’s well-being and health could be compromised.

The only other way that you might find a free Samoyed is if you adopt one from a rescue group that has special needs or is a senior.

Samoyed Adoption

  • $250–$1,000

Adopting a Samoyed from your local shelter or a rescue group is possible, but it might prove to be quite challenging to locate a specific purebred breed. You’re more likely to find an adult or perhaps a Samoyed mixed breed.

If you do manage to spot one of these dogs at a rescue organization, the adoption fee isn’t usually too high, and it also includes your dog arriving spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and with a full health check.

Do have a look at the breed-specific rescue groups, like Samoyed.org, which might have a group close to your location.

Samoyed Breeders

  • $1,000–$4,000

The first thing you should do is locate a responsible Samoyed breeder. Ask lots of questions and learn how to tell the difference between a puppy mill and a good breeder.

You will likely need to pay the breeder a deposit, but that money will go towards the final purchase of your puppy. An additional fee could also come from shipping costs if there aren’t any Samoyed breeders close to your location.

Samoyed Cost: Initial Setup and Supplies

  • $150–$500+

If you’re lucky enough to already own a number of these items, your costs will be lower. But if you need to purchase everything, it might be relatively expensive, but this also depends on your choices.

Additionally, if your puppy or dog has already been spayed or neutered and microchipped, this will bring your initial costs down.

How Much Does a Samoyed Cost Per Month?

  • $60–$300+ per month

These estimates will ultimately depend on how healthy your Samoyed is as well as some of the choices you make, such as what kind of food you buy your dog. It will also depend on things like hiring dog walkers, paying for pet insurance, and grooming your dog. We’ll go over the potential costs you might expect with a Samoyed below.

Samoyed Health Care Costs

  • $0–$500+ per month

All purebred dogs have specific hereditary conditions that your breeder should be upfront with you about. The medical issues your Samoyed is susceptible to are hip dysplasia, retinal degeneration, hypothyroidism, gastric torsion, and diabetes.

However, this doesn’t mean your Samoyed will inherit any of these conditions, but if they do your monthly bills will be higher.

Samoyed Food Costs

  • $30–$90 per month

There’s a wide variety of costs between dog foods as there are multiple options. You’ll want to aim for high-quality food, which doesn’t always have to be terribly expensive, but a well-balanced diet can help prevent health issues from developing.

Some people also pay for fresh food through home delivery, which can cost as much as $400 a month.

Samoyed Grooming Costs

  • $0–$120+ per month

You’ll need to keep your Samoyed well-groomed as they have very thick double coats that shed a fair bit. They will need daily brushing and never shave them down. This can negatively impact how they regulate their body temperature.

If you brush your pup every day, clean their ears, trim their nails, and brush their teeth regularly, your monthly grooming costs will be almost non-existent. If you prefer to bring your Samoyed to a groomer, the cost can range from about $40 to $120 each month.

Samoyed Medications and Vet Visits

  • $0–$300 per month

Visits to the vet clinic typically occur once a year unless your Samoyed has a health condition and needs to be monitored. These visits will depend on where you’re located and your specific clinic, but the prices can range from $200 to $400 every year.

If you opt to not brush your pup’s teeth, you will need to bring them to your vet once a month, and the cost can be about $300 up to $1,000, depending on certain factors. Lastly, you’ll also need to invest in parasite treatments for your Samoyed, such as heartworm, fleas, and ticks, which can be around $100 to $150 annually.

Pet Insurance Costs

  • $50–$100 per month

You don’t have to get insurance for your dog, but it can help to cover unexpected costs that might occur if your Samoyed gets ill or is injured. It is particularly beneficial if you have multiple pets.

How much you will end up paying will ultimately depend on the company as well as the health, age, and breed of your dog, as well as your location.

Environment Maintenance Costs

  • $5–$10 per month

All you really need is to purchase poop bags for your Samoyed’s walks. The pooper scooper isn’t necessary but makes the job of cleaning up your yard much easier (and, let’s face it, less gross).

Poop Bags$5–$10/month
Pooper Scooper$11–$30+

Samoyed Entertainment Costs

  • $10–$50+ per month

Entertaining your Samoyed can be inexpensive or very expensive, depending on your budget. As long as you take your Samoyed for long daily walks and lots of playtime to help wear them out and give them lots of love and attention, they won’t care so much if you buy them that expensive stuffed animal.

However, you will need to find ways to keep your dog entertained if you leave them alone for work every day. Just find the toys that they enjoy and keep them from chewing up your favorite shoes. There are also subscription boxes full of dog toys you can sign up for that can cost around $25 to $50 each month.

Total Monthly Cost of Owning a Samoyed

  • $60–$300+ per month

The total amount you spend on your Samoyed each month will depend on your dog and on your choices. If you brush your dog’s teeth regularly and groom them every day, some of those monthly costs will be lower.

Also, keep in mind that these are just estimates based on a single-dog household. And we also haven’t added emergency situations since they are unpredictable. It’s still important to be prepared in some way, particularly with your budget.

Additional Costs to Factor In

Unless you’re a very experienced dog owner, training is another aspect that you will need to consider. This is particularly if you have a puppy or a rescue dog that might not have been adequately socialized or trained. You can expect to pay around $200 to $600 every week for 6 to 8 weeks.

Then there’s using a doggie daycare or hiring a dog walker if you spend a lot of time outside of your home. Or, if you go on vacation, you might need to pay for a pet sitter or board your dog. Don’t forget the usual accidental damage that dogs can cause. Samoyeds are very energetic, so it’s quite possible they'll knock things over, so it’s good to keep that in mind.

Owning a Samoyed On a Budget

While paying for your Samoyed might take a sizable chunk out of your paycheck, there are methods you can use to budget in some other areas. Just remember, however, you should only budget as long as it doesn’t have a negative impact on your Samoyed’s health and well-being.

Saving Money on Samoyed Care

Training and grooming your Samoyed yourself will undoubtedly save you a fair bit of money. Do keep in mind, however, that training is technically short-term and is usually worth the investment. As long as you look after your Samoyed’s teeth, ears, and nails and brush them every day, they'll stay in good health, and you’ll save some money.

Also, try shopping in bulk for your pup’s food, as long as you have the space to store it. Look online or speak to your local pet store as it can help save money and provide your dog with an excellent diet.

Conclusion: Samoyed Price

While paying as much as $4,000 for a Samoyed puppy is a big chunk of money, it’s just the beginning, given the expense of taking care of a dog for the rest of its life. Do consider looking for a dog up for adoption. Rescuing a dog can be one of the most profoundly rewarding experiences you might ever have.

The monthly cost of your Samoyed can be as little as $60 or as much as $300, depending on your dog and some of the decisions you make on your expenditures.

All of this talk about money is important. Having the budget to take care of your dog properly is also important. But the love and companionship your Samoyed will bring to you is worth every penny.
