Parent breeds of the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix

Sometimes, it can be difficult to choose between dog breeds, particularly if you are drawn to a few specific ones. This is where looking for a mixed breed can work to your advantage.

The Samoyed Pomeranian Mix is an adorable cross between the Samoyed (also called Sammy) and Pomeranian (also known as Pom), which can potentially give you a great combination of these two amazing dog breeds.

Breed Overview

Height:

12–16 inches

Weight:

20–30 pounds

Lifespan:

12–15 years

Colors:

White, cream, black, brown, red, orange, or blue

Suitable for:

Active families, single people, in apartments or houses

Temperament:

Friendly, affectionate, loyal, playful, and energetic

The Samoyed Pomeranian Mix tends to look like a small to medium-sized floofy dog. The Pomeranian is a toy breed, and the Samoyed is medium in size, but both have full and poofy coats. In order to have a better understanding of any mixed breed, you need to look at the parents.

Many mixed breeds tend to take after one of their parents more than the other, both in appearance and temperament. The Samoyed Pom will definitely be double coated and fluffy, and since the Pom comes in a variety of colors, the Samoyed Pom can also be a variety of colors. But many tend to be white or cream due to the Samoyed parent.

Samoyed Pomeranian Mix Puppies

The Samoyed Pom is a rare breed, so finding a puppy might be a challenge. You should expect to pay roughly $800 to $2,000 or more if you find one.

You can try looking online for a breeder and post your interest in the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix on social media. It might also help to talk to Samoyed and Pomeranian breeders, as they might know someone who breeds the Samoyed Pom.

When you find a breeder, ask them as many questions as necessary. You should also ask to talk to other dog owners who obtained puppies from the breeder. It’s essential you only work with a reputable breeder. This way, you’re ensured a healthy puppy; the last thing that you want is to support backyard breeders and puppy mills.

You can also adopt a puppy, though it will be difficult to find a specific mixed breed like the Samoyed Pom at your local animal rescue. But it’s always worth checking. Adopting a dog or puppy can cost about $150 to $800, and they come vetted and rehabilitated. Giving a dog a second chance at a happy life can change everything!

Temperament & Intelligence of the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix

Both the Samoyed and Pomeranian are intelligent dogs with an independent streak. However, the Pom has a more noticeable stubborn streak than the Sammy.

While the Samoyed is bright, they range about average in the intelligence department compared to other breeds, which means the Pomeranian is a bit smarter.

The Samoyed is also super friendly and gets along well with people they don't know, while the Pom tends to be more reserved around strangers. Both breeds can be somewhat wary around other dogs.

It depends on which parent the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix takes after more, but this mixed breed will likely be smart, friendly, and a bit stubborn.

Are These Dogs Good for Families?

Part of the answer to this question depends on how small the dog is. The Pomeranian is affectionate and playful but isn’t always recommended around young children, primarily because of their size.

Samoyeds are wonderful with children, so if your Samoyed Pom is on the small side, older children are best, but if they are medium in size, most children should be fine. Either way, it's essential to teach your children to respect your dog.

Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?

Both the Samoyed and Pom tend to be somewhat wary around other dogs. Smaller animals like cats and guinea pigs aren’t recommended unless introduced at a young age and socialized well. Samoyeds have a prey drive, and leaving them alone with cats isn’t always recommended. The mixed breed will likely have a similar reaction to other small pets, so they will need constant supervision and plenty of socialization.

Things to Know When Owning a Samoyed Pomeranian Mix

Food & Diet Requirements

You should always opt for high-quality dog food that matches your Samoyed Pom’s current age, weight, and activity level. Since this breed could be small or medium, it’s important to pay attention to the dog's weight that the food is formulated for.

You should avoid giving your pup too many treats and definitely avoid table scraps. Many human foods have ingredients that are toxic to dogs. You’ll also need to provide your dog with constant access to fresh and clean water.

Exercise

This depends on which parent the Samoyed Pom takes after most; the smaller the dog, the less exercise they need. Both the Pomeranian and Samoyed are energetic dogs and require plenty of exercise, but the smaller legs of the Pom mean they need shorter walks.

So, if your Samoyed Pom is closer to their Samoyed parent in size, they will need roughly 2 hours of daily exercise. But if they are smaller, like their Pom parent, they might only need about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise.

Always include a fair bit of playtime with your dog every day. Just bear in mind that due to their thick coat, they might be prone to overheating if the weather is hot.

Training

Training can be a challenge with this breed. Their independent and stubborn streak can make things tricky, particularly for novice dog owners.

Both the Samoyed and Pomeranian are eager to please, though, so the mixed breed will likely take to training well with positive reinforcement. You’ll just need to keep training sessions interesting and short, or they will lose interest.

You will definitely benefit from taking your dog to obedience lessons, where you can get support for training. There’s also the advantage of getting socialization during these classes.

Grooming ✂️

Grooming the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix is not for the faint of heart. Both the Pomeranian and Samoyed have dense double coats of long fur, and the offspring of these breeds will have the same.

They will likely need a serious brushing session using a pin and slicker brush at least once a week. During the spring and fall, you’ll probably need to brush them daily to keep up with the shedding.

The more often you brush your dog, the less often they will need a bath. Generally speaking, bathing them once every 6 weeks or so is plenty, as long as you use a good dog shampoo.

Also, you should never shave your dog in the hopes that it will help in the summer. Double-coated dogs should never be shaved. It leaves them vulnerable to hot and cold temperature extremes and damages the undercoat, which doesn’t always grow back quite the same way. Double coats are necessary for dogs to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Finally, stay on top of trimming your Samoyed Pom’s nails every 3 to 4 weeks, and brush their teeth two to three times a week.

Health and Conditions ❤️

Understanding the potential health problems that the Samoyed Pom might experience means looking at both parent breeds. Purebred dogs can have genetic health conditions that might be passed down to their offspring, mixed or purebred.

This is not to say that all Samoyed Poms will inherit any of these conditions. But it’s always best to be familiar with the possibilities.

Minor Conditions

  • Eye problems

Serious Conditions

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Congestive heart failure

Male vs. Female

Typically, one of the main differences between male and female dogs is the size, but when you have two very differently sized parents, this isn’t necessarily accurate for the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix.

The other significant difference is when it’s time to have your dog spayed or neutered. Both male and female dogs benefit from the surgery, as it can help prevent future health conditions and pregnancies. It can also curb aggressive behaviors and help stop them from running off.

Finally, while some people might believe that there’s a difference in temperament between male and female dogs, the truth is that all dogs develop their personalities throughout their lifetime. Basically, it’s genetics mixed in with how they were socialized and generally treated as a puppy.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Samoyed Pomeranian Mix

1. The Pomeranian and Samoyed are both spitz breeds

Both the Samoyed and Pomeranian are spitz breeds, and the Pom is essentially a miniature version of dogs like the Samoyed. The Pomeranian’s ancestors were much bigger than the dogs that we know today; they used to pull sleds in the Arctic!

The Samoyed hails from Siberia and also pulled sleds, so it’s no wonder that these two breeds have so much in common! This means their mixed breed is also a spitz.

2. The Samoyed has a smile for a reason

The Samoyed is famous for their floofy white coat and permanent smile. The upturned corners of their mouth help prevent the breed from drooling, and since they typically live in frigid weather, it also prevents icicles from forming on their face.

Some Samoyed Poms might inherit that smile, making them look even more adorable!

3. The Samoyed Pomeranian Mix will likely have separation anxiety

Both the Pomeranian and Samoyed form strong attachments to their owners and can suffer separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. This means the Samoyed Pom will likely experience issues with separation anxiety too.

Final Thoughts

The Samoyed Pomeranian comes from two different yet similar breeds. Both parents are also known to be vocal, which is something to keep in mind if you live in an apartment.

But there’s no question that the Samoyed Pom will be an active and engaging companion that will love spending time with you. They can be a good choice for a first-time dog owner, but they will need to have patience and perseverance, as this breed will likely be mischievous!
